Students at Purcell Collegiate School are encouraged and supported to remain active by engaging in exercise, recreation, games, and competition sports. These opportunities may take a variety of forms including but not limited to:
- Purcell Collegiate School academy programs (coming soon)
- Community sports teams and clubs in Kimberley and Cranbrook
- Recreational leagues and games in ?aq’am and at St. Eugene Mission as coordinated by community members and/or boarding staff
- Skiing and snowboarding at Kimberley Alpine Resort
- Free golf at Purcell Golf course
- Access to the exercise facilities at St. Eugene Mission
Boarding staff will make students available of opportunities as they become available and will work with students to support and supervise participation in unique special events like running races, hikes, and orienteering challenges.

With plenty of fresh air and sunshine, students will find endless trails, accessible sports facilities, and parks.
We’ve got the largest municipal park in British Columbia, two mountain ranges to choose from, and many surrounding lakes, rivers, and wildlife to enjoy.
Students can golf our campus course, Purcell Golf, ski at the Kimberley Alpine Resort, traverse hundreds of kilometres of forest trails, hike rugged mountain peaks and kayak the freshwater lakes that skirt our community.
The Kimberley-Cranbrook area is an outdoor enthusiast’s playground all year long. Plus, with 300+ days of sunshine a year, plenty of wilderness to gaze upon, and opportunities to discover both the Purcell and Rocky Mountain ranges, we’ve got no shortage of recreation opportunities to enjoy.
There is also plenty of cultural and music opportunities as well. Art lovers and history buffs can discover our community through galleries and studios, live performances, classes for the young and young-at-heart, heritage sites, and fun festivals.

Kimberley Alpine Resort
With an average of 13 feet of snow each season, over 1800 acres of skiable terrain, nearly 2500 fee of vertical drop, 8 ski runs and the longest lit night-skiing run in North America, KAR is a hidden gem in the heart of British Columbia’s famed Powder Highway.
Kimberley Nordic Club
The modern facility includes a comfortable 1,200 sq ft lodge with washrooms, a racer’s warming/waxing hut, 30 km of groomed dbl track trails, a 3.3 kilometre lit loop for night skiing, a 1.0 km lit sprint loop and 6.5 km of single track trails. The facility also has some trails specifically constructed to be Paralympic skiing friendly.
Spirit Rock Climbing Centre
Climbing walls for everyone, from eight-footers for beginners to a wild overhanging section 50-feet high for experts. Climbing is a life-long sport, helping develop and maintain full body fitness and mental focus.
Golf Kimberley Cranbrook
There are an incredible seven championship golf courses located within 25 minutes of one another in the Kimberley-?aq’am-Cranbrook area including one located at our board facility (St. Eugene) and one connected to our school and free for students to play (Purcell Golf). Western Financial Place
This multi-purpose recreational facility is the premier sports and entertainment centre in Kootenays and plays host to a broad array of athletic events, concerts, and other special events. Its key amenities include:
- NHL sized rink (200’ x 85’) with 4268 Arena seating capacity
- Indoor Aquatic Facility
- 8 lane 25m lap Pool with diving board
- Entry Level Wave/Leisure Pool with water features
- Water Slide
- Hot Tub, Steam and Sauna Rooms
- Squash court with moveable wall converting into a racquetball or wallyball court

New Dawn Place (Soccer Dome)
A multi-purpose indoor training facility, New Dawn Place is most often used for soccer but can also accommodate footfall and variety of other sports.
